eBay is teasing on Twitter a new auction format or promotion titled “Marquee Auctions,” which is set to commence on June 12 and extend until June 22, to coincide with the NBA playoffs.
Don’t Miss
“To celebrate the #NBAFinals 🏀 we’re featuring the most ELITE lineup of NBA trading cards on our first-ever Marquee Auction! It will showcase highly valuable, rare basketball cards from our top, trusted eBay sellers,” the Tweet says.
What’s peculiar about this announcement is the lack of communication from the company to the sellers regarding the sale. Furthermore, the sale is scheduled to begin on the same day as Game 5 of the finals, rather than Game 1 as most would expect.
At present, the Denver Nuggets are in the lead with three wins to Miami’s one in the best-of-seven game series, with the potential to secure the championship on Monday.
With only days before this auction event starts, it remains unclear how sellers can participate in this sale.
Will eBay automatically select ongoing listings for inclusion, or are they collaborating with specific sellers to highlight particular cards?
Maybe this will be a host of eBay Live auctions, as the marketplace has been ramping up that feature for the past few months? However, the lack of a specific start time on Monday seems to suggest this is unlikely.
And, apparently, eBay is trying to make “Marquee Auctions” a monthly event, as the tweet suggests:
Clicking on the link provided in the “Marquee Auctions” teaser tweet leads to the URL ebay.to/MarqueeAuctionEvent. However, at present, the link directs users to the main page for Sports Trading Cards & Accessories.
The lack of communication regarding this auction, coupled with a poorly timed and vague teaser tweet, makes for an incredibly poor approach to promoting a new auction event at showcasing a high-value sale within one of eBay’s focus categories.
Hopefully, on Monday, we’ll learn more about this “stealth” auction.
